Ripple Effect

Life throws us curves and often I find when my world is all curvy, so are the lives of others around me. So interesting how we are all connected in some way. I have had a few experiences recently that have really touched my soul, enlivened my heart, and ignited something deep within. Some have roots from 30 years ago and others much more recent.

Many years ago I had the privilege of interfacing with 3 individuals who stole my heart. Their little beings were so loving and so bright.  My brother, best friend and I spent a lot of time with them during our summers working at the pool. As life took me onward on my own path after college, I lost touch with the three of them as they were quite younger than I was; ten plus years to my junior.  The last time I saw them was 25 years ago when we all mourned the loss of my brother together yet separately in our own sacred way as each relationship is unique. Recently, we all reconnected through social media and it was truly heart warming to learn how our past had impacted them. A few days ago we reunited in person, but this time in the capacity of their sibling loss rather than mine--My best friend, myself and the two of them.

Holding sacred space as you watch those you care about walk through their version of your darkest hour is so remarkable. It stirs up the muck and opens compassion and love like never before. Being raw….being authentic and laying it all out there….speaking truth rather than the band-aids of the things people think will help. Stepping into the uncomfortable and finding reconnection that runs deep and binds the years lost while being in the comfort of a friendship that has lasted the majority of my life. I am honored and blessed to have her love me through it all and for all these years. She is a saint…my saint.

Along these same lines, connection comes from those we know well and can also surprise you from those we don’t know all that well. Meeting new people often leads to interesting places. Discovering an inner warmth from an essential stranger is quite an interesting journey. When we choose to be humble and brave and decide to lay it all on the table with no smoke and mirrors, when you’re just yourself laid bare….magic happens. There is respect and playfulness. There is inquiry and discovery. There is truth and mystery in the most unlikely of places. As we all know, life is often filled with unexpected twists and turns. When asked 'how are you?’, I answered truthfully. Part of me has is a little ‘Maverick’, as many of you know. I tossed out the truth as a mini grenade as my inner processing over recent events was just beginning. I carelessly threw it out there not really caring what the repercussions were while at the same time I could no longer honestly commit to ‘I’m fine.'  I felt as though I was floating in space.  Peaceful in it, but definitely floating in space. My grenade was caught by someone who is kind and who asked the right questions to ground me although they are unaware of what ‘grounding' means. It is funny how authentic living can be contagious….welcomed. It is refreshingly so pure and invites it from others.

Yoga is like that…..refreshingly pure. It is so raw, so sweet, so maddening, so challenging, so freeing and so deep. It’s almost impossible to explain to people who don’t practice, that when you get on your mat it’s as though a transformative portal opens up and leads you straight to the Sacred. It is the unseen experience that transforms and heals. The practice is solitary, quiet and introspective. It is its own reward. The beauty is each time I get off my mat, I’m a little bit nicer, a little bit kinder, and a little bit more compassionate. I am warm and fuzzy and fierce. I am a peaceful warrior existing in the humble space of body and breath. I don’t have all the answers, but I do know that my world, both inner an outer, has changed since I committed to the discipline and practice of being on my mat.

Remember, the wisdom of yoga speaks to you and through you beyond the asanas (poses). You feel parts of your body that have remained asleep and disconnected until now. You feel, experience, and acknowledge parts of your life that you have tucked away and so sweetly hidden, wake up. It is as if a fog lifts to invite you to discover yourself,  your soul, God’s directive and hence live deeper into your own truth of who God has made you to be.

It’s the most wonderful time of the year to commit to a discipline that truly transforms you body, your mind, and your breath. As a result, it changes you and then changes others around you.  As we await the magical, silent embrace of the snow and this Christmas season, let’s decide to show up—show up for ourselves and be the change we want to see in this world. Our very own ripple effect makes WAVES.

Get on your mat and be brilliant.  Onward and upward.
Namaste,
Trish

Expanding and Contracting

Music can touch us in ways that words simply cannot. There is no doubt that yoga and music can shift our mood. We love music that compels us to dance, sing, cry, create, workout, connect, relax or sleep. We’re hooked on downloads, playlists, concerts and customized radio services which will queue up tunes that meet our specific preferences. We are literally “touched” by music as sound enters our bodies and vibrates the eardrum, creating a unique personal, visceral and emotional experience. Yoga also works on the physical, energetic and emotional layers of our being, and invites us to notice where we are being enlivened, opened, soothed and moved. It is an ancient science of the body, mind and spirit that aims to peel away layers of stress, illusion and egoic attachments so that we can experience our true expansive nature. The yoga of sound is called nada yoga. Nada yoga is an extensive science of how sound affects the body and mind. It aims to harmonize the physical, energetic and spiritual channels as a path to self-realization.

So what is it that’s actually happening when we immerse ourselves in our favorite piece of music or find ourselves in sweet bliss during the relaxation at the end of a yoga class? The answer lies in the magic and mystery of the nervous system and the brain, and the myriad of ways the brain can rewire itself through experience. It’s the brain’s neuroplasticity—its ability to create new neuropathways—which helps humans to grow and change. As we change our thoughts and our “vibe” in positive ways, we entrain our brains to a new level of “normal”, thus subtly and consistently changing our lives for the better.

As energy beings that are actually vibrating atoms, we literally “resonate” in different ways with different music or movements. Mindful movement practices like yoga, tai chi and qigong can be effective at attuning us to the energy body, and our physical, emotional and psychological landscapes. By doing so, we can deepen our capacity to navigate life with more awareness and skill.

Although the focus in yoga is on postures, alignment and transitions, the true science of yoga is much more than a fitness practice. It’s one of the most time-tested tools for transformation, helping us find places of resistance, fear, pain, patterns, judgment or illusion. This may be because of physiological responses in our bodies when we do yoga that signals our brains to release calming chemicals. These natural chemicals include endorphins which have a positive effect on our mood and pleasure responses. Coupled with the reduction of cortisol levels, the positive effects of a yoga class can last for hours.
Tools like music and yoga, when used with compassionate awareness, can be vehicles to help us touch undiscovered territory within ourselves.Undoubtedly, transformational music comes in many forms. For some it might be jazz, for others classical, and for others soul, rap (if you are like Kate), blues or the trance-inducing beats of electronic dance music.  All forms of music move me in different ways.

A few days ago I had the privilege of attending a practice set to the live musical skills of Girish. It was amazing and transported me into a magical space within. I felt new spaces in my body and my mind was free to wander. I left feeling moved and empowered from the music setting the rhythm to my yoga practice. His words are beautiful and his voice is like velvet to my soul. Soothing and comfortable and inviting.  I was left feeling expansive, whole and loved.  As I journeyed home,  I came upon an accident on the highway. It had just happened. It was gruesome. I had to navigate around death. This space brought me back to the darkest of days when my brother was killed many, many years ago in a car accident.  I was witness to the darkest hour. This expansive space and this emptying space…..at the same time.

Both give and receive.  When we are on the mountain top of life we expand and we love hard.  Even these amazing things, can leave us empty.  We have babies and we we are on could nine.  Then, a few weeks later, we are desperate for sleep and often feel empty as a result….drained…foggy.   Our empty spaces in life have the unique ability to take our breath away and leave is an dark place and space. Over time, however, these experiences offer us unique insights into life and into our soul which often result in the expansive side being given back. All mountain tops lead downward and all dark valleys lead upward. The highs and lows….giving and receiving….it is amazing.  Our life is amazing. We are amazing.  The ebb and flow of breath…of life….of ourselves….of others…a part…and together.  This space of feeling both has stayed with me these last few days….and continues to linger as I pray for the families whose lives have been forever disrupted and meditate on the musical changes gifted to my soul.  All so wonderful and magical….bestowing upon true gifts.

Get on your mat and let the music play.....Onward and upward.

Up & To The Right

A while back I had the privilege of learning from Patrice Connelly during a Working with Energetic Boundaries workshop. It was fascinating both in the intellectual knowledge as well as the experiential aspect of the internal work being done. At one point she had said that the TRUTH will demand a response. It will cut through the anger or frustration or resistance one might have toward it and demand their attention. We need not be afraid in facing the truth ourselves or in delivering the truth in love to others. God’s plumb line always resides within us. The truth is always the truth. It’s not fake or unreal.  It’s just there. It's unchanging. It's pure, simple, clear and it's waiting for you to see it, embrace it, and act on it.

I am often asked is there anything I regret? When I look back on some of the unwise choices I have made, they mostly have to do with not being willing to see the truth about something or someone. I believed what I wanted to. I projected MY truth when in fact, I knew God’s truth and chose to ignore it, trusting God would bless me anyway....at some point.  I either chose to ignore it or at times I was completely ignorant of it. In time, however, the veil of ignorance was lifted and I was always directed back to face the reality of the consequences of my choices, my actions, or my reactions to situations and the TRUTH was revealed.

One thing I have learned along my own path is everyone is just that….on their OWN path. I fully believe everyone will learn what they need to learn in their own God-given time frame.  I believe everyone has the potential to know and accept their God-given dharma (purpose). We are called to love one another as God first loved us. In order to do this we must be healthy and strong and be able to have crucial conversations.  Remember, those that see the world through the lens of complaints and problems due to others may be operating at a different/lower vibration than you are currently vibrating at.

It is up to us to know when we are strong enough to come alongside this type of person and raise them up and when to step back and create healthy boundaries.  Stepping into crucial conversations is part of the process of moving ourselves and other up and to the right.  It is uncomfortable for both parties, but one thing is clear—if TRUTH is at the center, all good things will come. Truth will cut through the emotions and demand attention and action for the betterment.  Speaking the truth in love is beneficial for the speaker.  The listener will have to do their own work in their own time. It is important to know where we end and another begins. We are not called to save the world. That job has already been given to someone else--thank you, Jesus!  We should always be moving up and to the right.

I don’t claim to be perfect. I am far from it. I am a student on my path. I stumble. I fall. I get back up. Brush myself off. I implement what I learned and move toward a kinder, more compassionate place with myself and with others.  I’ve learned  some things in life aren’t easy. In fact, some things in life are just a shit storm. Yoga and meditation have taught me how to face adversity with peace and most of all, grace. My yoga and meditation practices give me the tools to sit with huge discomfort. In my practice, not every pose feels good. Some of them downright suck and I dread them. When something comes up that isn’t exactly pleasurable, learning how to remain calm in breath, mind, and body…..learning to become the embodiment of equanimity moves us toward wisdom.

It’s hard and requires discipline. It requires us to be  CHECKED IN and not checked out. It requires us to hold steady when it gets tough rather than give up and go back to where it is comfortable. Growth demands us to move into the uncomfortable and will challenge our complacency.

Are you ready to move up and to the right? Are you willing to do the introspective work to do so? Are you willing to call others up and out as well?  Well then….let’s get to it!!

Onward and upward.... 🙏 ....together.

Relaxed Resilience....Effortless Effort

Relaxed Resilience......Effortless Effort

In life there seems to be times when we fight our way through....swim up stream....go against the grain. Sometimes these times are long spans and others are short. Some of us just live life this way while others of us try to avoid this situation all together.  Sometimes it is best to surrender and go with the flow or lessen the drive. Relax to be strong and be strong to relax.  Wait.....what the what?

Do you remember when you were first learning to drive a car, how exhausting it was??!!  All that concentration and working the pedals and steering and watching the road and worrying about running into something...SCANNING SCANNING SCANNING for deer!!!? I am not sure about you, but I remember a few of my first yoga classes. Do you remember first learning to do Adho Muka Svanasana (downward dog), so much to think about, to struggle with, body parts, sweat, face feeling like it will blow off, shoulders screaming, and I am supposed to BREATHE??? Well, we did our practice and we learned. I've heard certain yoga masters refer to this as "donkey work." And donkey work is inherently effortful.

After a while, donkey work becomes "mule work." Mules are smarter than donkeys. They respond to verbal commands and get a lot more done. The pupil doing mule work catches instructions and responds in his/her body more quickly with less extraneous movement and energy involved. He/She uses less effort and achieves more effect.

"The word mindfulness would suggest that the practice focuses solely on the arena of our minds, but without establishing a bodily posture and base that can naturally support the condition of mindfulness, our attempts to remain mindful may be frustrated or unsatisfactory." Will Johnson, The Posture of Meditation (Shambhala, 1996)

II:47, "Perfection in an asana is achieved when the effort to perform it becomes effortless and the infinite being within is reached". –B.K.S. Iyengar

The first step in developing effortlessness is learning. Through persistence and devotion, the pupil's practice gradually develops into "horse work." At this point, he/she has acquired increased sensitivity, more intelligence, and greater refinement. Watch a horse move and compare those movements with those of a mule or donkey. Of course, the horse moves much faster, but more to the point, its movements seem easier, more graceful and fluid, more effortless.

As you know, one of the dividends of persistent yoga practice is the longer and more often you do it, the more skilled you become. And when you act skillfully, much less effort is required to do the same task that initially was exhausting. Now that you've learned to drive your car (more or less hopefully), you can drive, eat a Snickers, tune your radio, read a road sign, and talk to your companion, all at the same time, usually without smashing yourself to bits. A certain amount of effortlessness comes as a result of learning.

Another important element in finding effortless effort is your intention (sankalpa). Why are you practicing the asanas (postures)? If it is primarily to become stronger, to become more flexible, and to build stamina–in other words, if your goal is primarily physical–then the effort in your practice will be quite different than if your intention in doing the asanas is to bring your body and mind to a state of quiet equilibrium. You can become quite the whiz–bang performer of really hard poses and still be very effortful in the doing. Your poses will look spectacular to the untrained eye, but they will be far from perfection as Patanjali defines it. If you don't care about being effortless, if that's not what you're looking for, then it's unlikely that effortlessness will come any time soon.

Given what has just been said, one thing to keep in mind is that not every practice need or should be geared toward effortlessness. Sometimes you're trying to learn something new: a new pose or a new action in a pose. In that case, you will be using effort to learn what you're trying to learn. You don't know what you don't know after all! You will make mistakes and you will need to repeat things over and over. Even though you may be a mature practitioner, in that particular practice you are back to donkey work. Perfection is not at issue. Beginner's mind ACTIVATE!

The single, most crucial element in your quest for effortless effort is to develop a quiet, receptive mind. This can come only when you have done your donkey, mule, and horse work and have decided that effortlessness is what you're looking for in your practice. As long as you're learning the mechanics of an asana and trying to build the requisite physical skills, the reflective mind necessary for effortlessness will be very elusive. You will busy "doing." Doing takes effort. For your efforts to become less effortful, you must become skillful and intentional in your doing, otherwise, the grossness of your doing will disturb your mind. To go from doing to undoing, you must, then, become quiet, receptive, and reflective in mind and body.

"The soil has to become steady and only then you get reflections. So, for reflection, your mind should be quiet, like a lake, then you get the reflection…. If you are constantly creating waves and ripples in your mind, there can't be any possibility of reflection."  Prashant Iyengar

The adjustments necessary to create a reflective mind and to reduce effort take place on a number of different levels. One level is familiar to all of us who practice Iyengar Yoga: the level that involves alignment. Alignment is important for a lot of reasons–safety, biomechanical efficiency, aesthetics–but it is also critical in facilitating the free flow of energy in the body. Misalignment creates resistance, and resistance impedes the flow of energy. Increased effort then becomes necessary to overcome the resistance engendered by misalignment. Furthermore, when the body is aligned properly, the cells of the body function in harmony. This harmonious functioning creates ease in the body and serenity in the mind. Both body and mind then can come more readily to a reflective state.

For the beginner, alignment involves effort, donkey work. They are learning what actions to take to bring about proper alignment in the pose. They aren't worried about effortlessness, they are just trying to get the alignment right. They are not reflecting, they have  to keep thinking, and have to keep doing.

For the mature practitioner, the doing is done.  And because they are capable of a reflective state of mind, the minute the alignment is dropped, it is like a pebble pitched into the still lake of their mind. They don't think, "Oh, my alignment has dropped. I have to re-engage." Instead, the cells of their body perceive the change and they adjusts intuitively. At this stage, alignment and adjustments don't go through the brain, which would disturb the reflective state and create effort. Rather, the misalignment is the doing, and the reflective, intuitive adjustment is the undoing.

Another way to bring the mind to a more quiet state is by being aware of your breath. It is also a way to monitor and adjust the effort you are using in your practice. Beginners often don't know when they're holding their breath. They have to learn to observe the breath as part of the doing of the asana. Assuming no respiratory problems, the breath should be as soft, steady, and easy as possible–in other words, effortless. Certainly different poses put different demands on your breathing. Your breath in Fully Bound Side Angle will be inherently more labored and difficult than in Side Angle Supported by our forearm on thigh or a block. But within the context of any given asana, your breathing will change depending on how much effort you are putting forth. As you adjust your pose, be conscious of the effect of your adjustments on the quality of your breathing. Pay particular attention to your diaphragm and create as much softness and space there as possible. If and when you find your breathing labored or you need to breathe through your mouth, you know you're far away from effortlessness. As your adjustments bring your breathing into a soft, easy rhythm, you will find that your body lets go of some of its effort and your mind moves to a more reflective state; it becomes quieter and clearer.

Once you've aligned and relaxed the muscles of the body, and the mind has attained a receptive state, attention must be paid to the sense organs. The eyes, ears, tongue, skin, even the state of the mucus membranes in the nose and sinuses have to be brought to a highly sensitive state. I have found this to be easier to do in Pranayama than in Asana. The relative stillness of the body in Pranayama lends itself to our being able to observe the sense organs in a very subtle way. When you've sensitized yourself in Pranayama, then that sensitivity can be brought to your Asana practice.

As in relaxing the muscles, the relaxation of the sense organs is, at first, a matter of doing. You intentionally direct your attention to each of the sense organs, release grips and tension, and allow them to become quiet. The receptive mind perceives tension (effort) and sends a message to let it go. We teachers do this with our pupils whenever we teach them Savasana. Once you are skilled at attaining complete passivity in the sense organs, however, the mind slips from receptivity into reflectivity. The slightest change (which in a passive state inherently implies effort) in your eyeball pressure disturbs the reflective calmness of the mind and elicits an immediate response in your eye to relax that does not pass through the mind.

From the experience of effortless effort in the practice of reclining Pranayama, you can move on to developing a reflective state of mind in seated Pranayama (much more challenging). And even though Pranayama follows Asana on the eightfold path, the quality of effortlessness developed in practicing seated Pranayama then can be brought to bear on your Asana practice. And so, as you reach the fourteenth minute of your Dwipada Viparita Dandasana (Upward Facing Two-Foot Staff Pose), your reflective mind remains exquisitely sensitized to the tiniest ripples your body creates and observes as the reflective nature of the cells of your body causes them to shift subtly to realign and release the unintended and unnecessary effort that disturbed them.

Abhyasa often is translated as "effort." It is about doing. And vairagya often is translated as "detachment" or "dispassion." It is about undoing. Just as Pranayama follows Asana, so does vairagya follow abhyasa. But just as Pranayama can inform and refine Asana, so varaigya (undoing) can, and indeed must, color abhyasa (doing) so that each has the flavor of the other. Yes, you may be working toward touching your head to your feet in Kapotasana or King Pigeon Pose (abhyasa/doing), but you must be willing let go of the idea of the final pose when your sacrum signals you that it is not yet ready to move in so deeply (vairagya/undoing).

I have heard abhyasa (doing) and vairagya (undoing) described as being the two wings of the eagle of sadhana (daily spiritual practice) that carries us over the hills and valleys of the fluctuations of the mind to the abode of yoga where we can be, moment to moment, our true self, undivided and complete. At that point, (II:48), where we have transcended duality, where doing and undoing, inner and outer, effort and effortless, doing and doer all fall away. Then it is no longer a question of more effort or less effort or even effortless effort. Then, when we remain in a deep backbend for what seems like eternity, for that moment, we are the asana, we are the infinite present. Without effort, we simply are.

And then the challenge becomes applying this effortless effort to our daily rhythms.  Where our doing and undoing, our inner and our outer, our effort and effortless, our doing and our being the doer fall away.....and again...we just simply ARE.  We trust in the moment that all things work out as God intended. We let go of our agenda and simple fall into a space of being present, being compassionate, and being the brilliance we are in that given moment.  Moment by moment we slowly spiral inward until one day we meet our soul....and we shine.....effortless effort......we SHINE.

Connection

There is something to be said about the inner journey of yoga and of life.  There is a peace in going away, being plucked away from your normal rhythm, and the same peace of coming back home again. Yoga is a sacred world in itself. It always amazes me when I go to a training to deepen my knowledge and study of yoga, the connection I have with the others on the same path as me for that moment.  It doesn't matter if we don't speak the same language or even practice the same style of yoga, we share the same language of the body, the mind, the heart, and the soul that is the practice. This has been the case when I travel to teach abroad or attend a training here in the States. A few weeks, back I finished another training and my journey was long. Long for many reasons, both internal and external to me, yet the journey was the same......a long slow spiral inward to deepen my soul-connection to myself and to others.
The connection with a few of these people was and is deep right from the moment we met.  ‘Ahhh, I get you and WE are going to be FRIENDS for a long time,” type of feel. We have each poured our hearts and souls into the practice.  We have suffered, cried, laughed and loved together. We know what it means to put in the work and grow, evolve and expand from the practice and each other.  We come humbly before one another to learn, to explore, and to grow. We each had our own path, but the lesson was the same. We learned to break our glass house, take off our armor, and crack our hearts wide open. By doing so we each chose love, connection, intimacy and real wisdom.  Each of us had our own unique experiences that brought us to this magical point where all of our lives intertwined to strengthen, embolden, and deepen each other so that we could become more brilliant.  I am so grateful to have intertwined with these training buddies....we were meant to meet.....we were meant to teach.....we were meant to explore....we were meant to break a little to grow back stronger....

Yoga isn’t about creating perfect beings or a perfect pose. It’s about learning to live from the heart. My practice is the place where I stumble and fall, the place where I am student, where I give myself the freedom not to know, to explore the terrain of my body, my mind, my heart, and my soul. Sometimes there are surprises and sometimes there is just the steady work of getting on the mat and seeing the reality of my inner world clearly..through God’s eyes rather than my own… And sometimes there is just the silence of my breath. I practice because each time I get off my mat I’m just a little more vulnerable, a little more humble, and a little bit stronger. On my mat I remember how to feel, how to let go, how to forgive, and how to grow. I choose when to challenge myself and when to back off, when to be bold, and how to be gentle. I find my balance. Yoga offers me a wordless place that I can find, deep in my breath where my mind starts to seem less important. I can move to build heat, to burn away my struggles, and to let my heart become free; free to feel. There is discipline in asana: shoulders on the back, pelvis neutral, feet rooted, spine long, inhale/exhale, rotation inward and outward reaching, keep focus on nothing but everything. I become completely present. I find forgiveness as I exhale. I am truly able to uncover my graceful self, easy in my own body, soft and grateful in my heart.  Within my practice, I find a place...a space...where I am complete with alive stillness connected to God.

So there it is……connection…..connect to self. Connect toe each other. Be better. Do better. Together.

Onward and upward.

Blooming Lotus

Stormy skies. Crazy weather. Strong winds. All part of the ebb and flow from nature. The resistance of nature is needed in order to grow and to cultivate perseverance and strength. Too much rain, wind and sun can defeat, but the right amount creates growth. I was reading from Lila Lolling's book Walking the Ancient Path recently and came across her description of the growth of the Lotus Flower.

Padma, the lotus flower is a beautiful, magnificent, spiritual image and teacher. Padma roots deep down in the muddy waters of darkness. This darkness is said to represent the place void of light. It is of a low vibration, explained as the absence of awareness & consciousness, and contains very little energy to fulfill one’s life purpose. It is the place of dormancy, like a tulip bulb in the winter.  However with great effort, the lotus grows upward, striving against the gravity-ridden wight of the water. She is dedicated t finding the Source of Light. Consider for am moment how strong gate lotus becomes in her journey upward.d She gains tremendous strength through each challenge. She has to sprout from the bulb, crack the earth with her strong roots, and then rise through the water, chasing after the light. the lotus, just as you might fee, isn’t even sure what she is seeking.  By surrendering tot he force of nature, Padma’s journey leads her to experience her full potential. When she finally arrive at the water's surface, she opens up and floats effortlessly, basking in the glory of the light. She is fully blossomed and receiving in the moment. She is able to completely rest, having fully come to know the purpose of her birth.

By superimposing the symbolism of the lotus onto your own life journey, you can use as an analogy of rising from darkness to light, from suffering to bliss. Whether your journey has been filled with challenges or blessings, prairies or mountains, each experience is a gift from the God and therefore a teaching specific to you. You philosophy believes whatever happens in your life is not done to you, but actually done for you. Your soul is asking you to initiate the process of unraveling years of suffering to finally emerged as Total Bliss and Pure Peace—in yoga this is Samadhi.

This got me thinking. As yogis, we are all on this transformative path of deepening our faith practices as we move toward living from our soul space.  The lotus flower is a great force of nature we can all strive to be like.
Just like spring time in Wisconsin, we can become turbulent and unpredictable inside just as life can be outside.  One thing I have learned through this magic carpet ride of life is stormy skies can bring in the most magical light if we let it. It's the way the light filters in through the clouds that makes it that much more of an experience. We must pay attention to the filters and windows we view life through. We must be willing to do a little spring cleaning from time to time to check in and bring ourselves back to God's plumb line rather than our own. We need to b e willing to clean our windows and change our filters. We can't let the muddy waters of our past or the current tides of our life today create false illusions.  We need to be fast to forgive, hold no grudges over people we care about, and let go of the past. We need to embrace and apply the lessons our past has taught us and be open to the growth opportunity our current situations offer.

Let us remember to not become entangled in our dark, shadowy, murky spots for if we do,  we will  find ourselves falling into their temptation and despair. We will remain tamasic. Let us remember to choose to strive toward toward the light, maybe just for this moment, but we keep moving upward as we shed layers that no longer serve us. Our life's path is meant for our spiritual growth...all the twits, the turns, the mountains, the dark valleys and yes, the stormy skies. We are, after all, all just making our way to the light so we can rest, fully blossomed, into the person God created us to be.💗  Come home to your soul and let others color yours just as you color theirs.  As the saying goes, 'No mud.....no lotus'.  Get dirty. Break through. Bloom.  Shall we?

Onward & Upward.

Shine on.

During meditations lately I have been receiving a message from God: Go a mile deep, Trish, rather than a mile wide.  Also life circumstances have been tidal waving toward me.  Schedules changing, job demands increasing for the better, partnerships solidifying, life circumstances shifting, and so on. Trying to get in every last minute with my daughter who heads to college in a few months.  I do  not like the feeling of being not being grounded so I meditate more.

Within the meditations over the last few months, there has been an ever present message to dive deep. Rather than going a mile wide, can I travel a mile deep instead? Life certainly has many twists and turns. It is always interesting when you know God is leading you, preparing you for what is to come, but you have no idea what or when......and so you just......wait.....ever impatient....you wait.

Then the perfect thing materializes at the most imperfect time. If you trust and you sit down on the inside and listen.....I mean REALLY LISTEN....the answer is there. Step forward or remain where you are. It helps if we let go of attachment to outcome and understand God has the results covered. All we can do is RESPOND to what God is asking us to do. Then, if we are brave enough and trust enough, we take that step forward....the perfect thing at the imperfect time....and things begin to fall away....the foggy things, the cloudy things....and we just KNOW our feet are guided and obstacles slide off and we become free.....discovering it actually IS the perfect timing. We just didn't know it yet.

Our new path can be confusing and overwhelming and exciting and motivating and disturbing and exhilarating.  All of it, just twisting and turning, moving and shaking, bending and straightening.  God has a plan and we are on it. One step at at time. Learning, growing, pruning, refining, and moving forward one breath at a time.  We need to be present and still and not get carried away on those attachments, the need to succeed, or the drive that knocks others over.  Our hearts and minds need to be open to hear, to see, and to feel the ripple effect on others and be willing to love them and ourselves as we ARE.  God meets us where we are at and so we must learn to meet others where they are at.  Our lives are tangled and we are constantly weaving webs that color one another's souls.  God often asks us to trust Him and take an unusual path....one less traveled and so many will judge or assume things that are not true. You can only trust and live for the audience of One.

Remember your vibe attracts your tribe. Shine brilliantly and be such a dope, God-centered soul, that people crave your vibe.  Love them and your self wildly as you take the road less traveled....as it was made specifically for you with God's purpose......and you were made to be brilliant.  Shine on.

Onward and upward as usual!  Grab your cape.....it's gonna be epic.

Winds of Change

Given the windy days we have had...as well as the crazy multi-season weather in week we have had....this post comes at just the right time!

Spring is approaching and so is our time change...the dreaded one....the spring ahead.  It is a hard transition but offers a promise of longer days!  Hooray!  So this topic of Change resonates deeply with me as this is exactly what I am going through in my life. I am transitioning into new space both personally and vocationally. Yoga is my passion and my of life. There is also a part of me that constantly seeks a new challenge. I love people, helping people move toward holistic wellness (mind, body AND SPIRIT) and bringing passion to whatever I do.  I have had so many irons in the fire for several years, gently cultivating and nurturing relationships of various kinds; personal and business partnerships.  Watering seeds planted and each year tending to those that take root and gave life…..as well as being diligent to weed those out that did not take or sprouted in an unfortunate way.  My husband and I are approaching some life altering shifts in life as John approaches retirement, Ryan heads to college, and our parents enter into stages of life where they need our help and a lot of it. All changes are good changes, but right at this moment it is like a tidal wave coming at me…..powerful and looming.....magnificent and roaring.....all at once…in its beautiful, divinely appointed approach.  Most days I am excited as hell and feel empowered by its approach. God and I talk all day every day so it's of no surprise of its arrival. I am so blessed by what He has bestowed in me and upon me. I could never imagine all things coming together as they have and with the most unbelievable timing. THEN…..there are other days my inner chatter (I have affectionately names it THE COMMITTEE), screams doubt at me and tries to get me to feel like I am barely able to keep my head above water. THE COMMITTEE  tells me I am not deserving of the good approaching and very deserving of the struggle approaching and how could epic-ally (is this a word?) fail at all of it.

If i ask you to close your eyes for a minute and look at your life right now: Do you feel any change? Whether its the change of season, a new job, a new business, a new place, maybe a break up, a transition or even a new relationship or its your health, your finances or even death if you feel a certain emotion arise in you then yes you are experiencing change in your life. Now this can lead to us to either a happy place or a feeling sadness depending on what you are going through. Irrespective of what you may be going through. the one thing in life we can always count on is Change.

Looking at nature we can learn that everything everywhere and at all times is always changing..sun rises, sunsets, days change to night, flowers bloom, a little cocoon becomes a butterfly, something is always born and something is always dying. This is just nature and life at play. There is no resistance, there is no good or bad it just is what is.

On a human level, change can be something where the old makes way for newer and better things in life . Just look at the way we communicate in the world now. Each new invention from the old phone to our latest cell phone to social media has forever transformed our present life. If we examine our behavior to each of the previous inventions we may conclude that no matter how good each new thing is the transition is not always easy and sometimes it is hard to adapt to. What is curious bout this tension is we always know instinctively what we are getting now is better than what was. Many times we forget this new change in our life has arrived NOW  because our old ways are just not serving us.

Amazingly this is exactly what life is doing to us, taking us to newer shores. This is when we must realize each one of us was born with special, unique, and God-given gifts, a profound purpose what Wayne Dyer has described as ‘the music in our hearts as we were born with, something within you that no one else can hear but you’ I believe there is a Buddhist saying something to the effect of:  “Our resistance to Change is suffering”. One eventually realizes change may look like it is happening on the outside of us, but is in fact, happening from inside. Its a full time inside job.  Yoga philosophy encourages us to let go of attachments and to become a witness to our senses. Yoga philosophy also teaches in order to have inward peace and contentment in all things and in every circumstance we must have a faith practice.  Yoga’s sole purpose is to prepare the mind and body to meditate on and with God.

I was taught Jesus came to this world because humans could not detach themselves from the things which displease God, our creator. God accomplishes this (detachment from earthly things, material things, things of the flesh) in those who trust in Him through Christ's life and death. He changes the heart and mind through the knowledge of the truth and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Yep, in other words, we get a helper!

2 Corinthians 5:17-20 (MSG)

16-20 Because of this decision we don’t evaluate people by what they have or how they look. We looked at the Messiah that way once and got it all wrong, as you know. We certainly don’t look at him that way anymore. Now we look inside, and what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a new life burgeons! Look at it! All this comes from the God who settled the relationship between us and him, and then called us to settle our relationships with each other. God put the world square with himself through the Messiah, giving the world a fresh start by offering forgiveness of sins. God has given us the task of telling everyone what he is doing. We’re Christ’s representatives. God uses us to persuade men and women to drop their differences and enter into God’s work of making things right between them. We’re speaking for Christ himself now: Become friends with God; he’s already a friend with you.

Well,  if you like things short and sweet here is the NIV version

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come:[a] The old has gone, the new is here!

So even though change can look like a struggle and be unbearable at times, the sooner we embrace change and rely on God’s power to soar through it,  the sooner we move forward to new things in life. We must be willing to take every thought captive and bring it back to the plumb line of God.  Remember we are beautifully, powerfully, and wonderfully made by God for A PURPOSE. Our dharma is set in our soul--much like the baby dolls of the past and their infamous MADE BY MATEL stamp on their rear ends. Our hearts are stamped MADE BY GOD.

Our yoga practice offers us tools to quiet down THE COMMITTEE in order to hear the only voices that matter; our soul’s ad God's.  When you are living out your purpose, things can look like a tidal wave. Remember when the shadow of their approach take you over, they are not coming at you to smash you…..they are coming to lift you up and take you for one elegant and amazing, Godly blessed ride whose ripple effects you will never know!  Trust it.  Paddle out. And take your ride!

Let me end with a quote from Gandhi ” Be the change you want to see in the world “.  Life is messy in all kinds of ways so just be brilliant in your mess. Eyes and hearts tuned inward. Its the best we can do.

Yep….Let’s get after it!  Onward and upward as always….

Inward Toward Our Heart

Inner peace as always is free or so the saying goes.  The journey inward toward this goal, however, comes at a price. We cannot short cut, skip or cheat our way along our self-excavation journey. Whenever we strive to create a new way of being, we can't flip a switch or get it done in one practice, or 10 or 20. Instead we stand where we are and look ahead to a long and sometimes arduous road to our end goal. Our yoga practice offers a beautiful, affirming, and palpable re-connection to ourself, our soul, and God. By practicing yoga and engaging in our devotional practices we increase the connecting patterns between our spirit, our mind, and our body.

Sri T. Krishnamacharya described yoga as the process where the impossible becomes possible and the possible over a long period of time becomes easy. The place where many of us fall off the path is when we strive for easy straight from impossible. In other words, we want instant gratification, domination, and mastery. If we experience a pose or a bind and label it as 'impossible' and want it to be easy immediately, we soon become frustrated and let down with our practice.  Change does not happen quickly and certainly not immediately. We need to embrace what we have labeled impossible and allow its difficulty to teach us. We need to learn the discipline of staying in those ugly, difficult, impossible places and allow discovery and learning to happen. If we embrace this and choose to enter into it, soon the impossible will show us how it might be possible....one day. When we come to our mats in a surrendered state….a state open to allowing our yoga to teach us….to enlighten us…..to shine the light of awareness within us.....we can engage with a particularly challenging practice and face/begin to conquer our obstacles of doubt, fear, pain, hatred, boredom, frustration, grief, and every other obstacle/reactionary pattern that holds us back from being brilliant. Staying present in difficult states of mind and of body can evoke deeply ingrained reactionary patterns such as panic, denial and escapism. Yoga is an exquisite tool and in order to use it, we must be willing to unroll our mats and help ourselves.  We must be willing to stay present and go within. We must be willing to surrender to God, the intention He made us with, and accept the invitations He puts before us. He is always inviting us to join Him and He is already at work in and around us.

When we embark on the inner quest of yoga we must acknowledge the journey will never end. We must embrace our inward journey to our heart with a slow, steady perseverance. When we do this, we are able to face the unfaceable, conquer the unconquerable, and confront the absolutely terrifying places within us.  We can gain access to a place within ourselves where our soul dwells and it is here….in this place….where it is eternally peaceful, powerful and loving beyond all measure. Every asana, every movement and every breath we take redefines the very essence of our being. A journey into our heart will reveal the dwelling place of our soul. Once there,  we dare able to discern and follow the soft, loving, and guiding voice of God for He is with us every second, every breath……and when we connect into this.....we discover true inner peace and then..... nothing can stop us.

Onward and upward.
Namaste,
Trish

Issues in the Tissues

All of us have pain and all of us have grief.  Some of us have experienced devastating loss and others of us have not, but the fact remains, we all have loss of something.  Perhaps it was a job, a failed relationship, betrayal, death of a loved one, death of a child, the loss of a dream becoming reality.  There is a belief out there that we all grieve the loss of knowing our Creator and who we were meant to be.  So, our life is an unfolding of traveling inward toward our soul and toward God.  Uncovering what has always been there all along.....our soul and our dharma (divine purpose).

Very recently, a family close to me lost their son suddenly and I was asked to walk alongside them as they began to travel through this. Since I had walked a similar road many, many years ago with the death of my brother, it was as if I was witnessing a video of my family from years past.  Grieving has many faces and many places. Each person has their own process, perspective, and unique relationship with the departed loved one. What speaks to one, may enrage another.  Every feeling is valid and each is unique. I am deeply honored to have been asked and trusted to step into something so sacred.

There is something very hallowed about stepping into another's pain, discomfort and grief.  In this instance, we become holders of a very sacred container where we must be okay with living in the discomfort....the discomfort of not having answers, not being able to fix it, not knowing what to say, and the discomfort process of others.  It is in these solemn situations where we need to step up and into what God is calling us to do.  Be present and allow our hurting person to lead the way through their own chaos....their own process.....their own experience.  It is here, that leaning into the wisdom and discernment of our soul  is paramount so we know when to speak, when to listen, when to push, and when to exit.  It is the essence of living our yoga.....living our faith......being strong and being relaxed at the same time.

Every experience we have is stored in our bodies so essentially our experience becomes our biology. Through the course of being with this family during the first few days, I was afforded the unique opportunity to discover just how my body has stored my experience from 25 years ago.  I stepped into a space where I was a witness both to this beloved family and also to the inner depths of stored memories. I fully expected these stored memories to surface as visual flashbacks and searing heart pain, but was surprised to discover physical holding so deep....so temporal.  It was maddening. Unnerving.  Relentless.

Places within my body I had forgotten about or rather, places that had not let me know they existed for over a decade where now screaming their existence.  I was enthralled to realize I was not done processing my own experience within my biology. I would have assumed the physical storage was long ago finished while the emotional aspects would linger for a lifetime. Instead, I found my body still holds deep sorrow and anxiety of structure falling away; structure of my family being shattered and structure of how the world is supposed to work being abruptly altered.  When sitting with this screaming area and giving it breath, I became entranced with the process of my body slowly letting go.  Reluctant release of the issues in my tissues.  Underneath the throbbing, screaming madness of the physical gripping, lay a burning anger.  This anger was deeper than the piercing sorrow, deeper than the grip of anxiety, and was anchored in an event much more recent.  Our bodies are so complex. Delving into the layers of experience.....the layers of emotions.....to find they are layered not by time, but perhaps by the ability of being able to deal with them respectfully, mindfully, and in healthy ways......only God knows for sure.

Having my body unlock is protective pattern and be offered an invitation to let go, to surrender, to release it from its identity, was truly amazing.  The release was deep within my infrastructure--deep muscles, organs, and energetic releases....layers and layers of holding was unwinding...and the healing force was invited in.  I sat with a conundrum of emotions for many days and was in the fortunate space of being out of town, alone, and at a yoga training. Due to this circumstance, my body was allowed time and space to tenderly unfold, uncoil, untangle and come back home to a space it had not occupied for many, many years.  The puzzlement of emotions weaned and I arrived at a very solid, strong and relaxed space.....a peaceful kind of warrior space.

So it is with this experience I invite all of you to travel inward.....to be brave....to be open to whatever God is inviting you into....whether that be into someone else's experience or your very own.  It is a new year  and a time to call forth a new you.  Let's do this together!  Commit to our practice, make it regular, make it consistent,  and let us remember the WHY that calls us to our mat. Let's commit to being bold, being brave and going within so we can untangle to become better for ourselves and for others.  Practice onward. Practice upward.
